Terahertz can make a smartphone 1,000 times faster

Forget 3G and 4G, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh announced that they had found a wireless data transmission that is thousands of times faster than current standards that still rely on Gigahertz frequencies such as 3G and 4G.

Hrvoje Petek, a professor of physics and chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh who became chairman of the researchers claim to have discovered what they called terahertz data transmission. The study was published in the March 4 issue of Nature Photonics and is displayed on the website of University of Pittsburgh.

"The ability to modulate light such as bandwidth can increase the volume of information carried more than 1,000 times compared to what the current technology," said Petek.

Terahertz waves are a kind of super fast which could potentially be used to utilize part of the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and infrared light.
